Global Seminar for Environment and Sustainability

The Global Seminar is a consortium of educational institutions concerned with crucial issues for
    the future of our planet.

  •    We believe shared understandings that transcend national boundaries, cultures and backgrounds offer
the best hope for a sustainable environment and a safe, secure food supply.

The Global Seminar is a learning community of students and faculty from around the world who study
key global issues, simultaneously and interactively.

  •     Fully interactive technology including live videoconferences and interactive online labs,     supports intellectual discussions among students, faculty and international leaders.

Global Seminar partners and participants comprise an international problem-solving team, addressing     case studies of the highest order of importance for the survival of our planet.

  •    Our goal is to prepare future leaders and citizens of the global community to articulate policy agendas     that will lead to a sustainable environment, a high level of public health, and a stable and secure food     supply. Our partners include academic, business, and government leaders.

   The Global Seminar Goals

  • Create changes in education to foster international partnerships in distance learning and a forum
    for future development

  • Teach critical and creative thinking about sustainability issues and approaches

  • Use technology to create a model of global education through a virtual environment

   The Global Seminar Objectives

  • Increase awareness and understanding of the releationships among economic, political, social, ethical/philosophical, and technical dimensions of sustainability

  • Enhance intercultural communication skills, improve learning and build leadership skills

  • Increase communication among faculty and administrators at participating institutions

  • Refine a model suitable for universities interested in creating effective, fully interactive international educational collaborations

   The Global Seminar Method

  • Case Study Approach:

    • Students apply research and analytical skills to discuss and reflect on real-life cases from a variety
of perspectives. Case studies developed by seminar partner institutions show the inextricable worldwide
link between population demographics, agricultural practices, social and economic issues, health, and the environment. Topics have similar relevance, intrigue, impact and policy implications, and case studies are designed to investigate, plan, and develop scenarios to solve existing real-world problems.

  • Constructivist Learning Philosophy:

    • Learning activities are grounded in the modern educational theory of cognitive psychology, which requires students to take responsibility for their learning and engage in reflection and critical thinking through a network of engagement in virtual face-to-face interaction. Faculty members coach and facilitate student-centered, experiential learning and set the stage for students to become actively engaged in the learning process.

  • Innovative Technology:

    • Interactive videoconferencing

    • Electronic discussion boards and virtual chats

    • Web-based course management and archival system

   The Global Seminar Organization

  • Students across global institutions share a common curriculum and come together through video conferences to discuss cases and share reflections

  • Participating institutions are grouped into clusters of 4-7 institutions, each led by a volunteer coordinator

  • Each cluster shares a mutual timetable and management of cluster activities is facilitated through email, telephone and video conference

  • Members meet at a biannual Global Seminar Conference to plan courses

   Examples of Case Study Topics:

  • Population

  • Global Warming

  • Globalization, Trade and Development

  • Biodiversity

  • Novel Food Proteins

  • Land and Resource Management

  • Sustainable Tourism

  • Global and Local Water Concerns

  • Response to Natural Disasters

  • Urban Design and Green Cities

The Global Seminar for Environment and Health

The Global Seminar for Environment and Health builds on the Global Seminar for Environment and   Sustainability initiated in 1998 at Cornell University. The original program now has a network of over 50   academic institutions worldwide. Institutions working in clusters of 5-7 hold a semester- long seminar focused   on a theme such as biosecurity, food systems, horticulture, or a new topic, Environment and Health, which   serves as an illustration.

The Global Seminar for Environment and Health, initiated in 2007-2008, is an interactive videoconference
based course for students from selected medical    institutions to discuss four real-life case studies related to   health and the environment that affect public health worldwide. Initial participants include medical schools   where VCOM has an outreach clinic: the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Honduras.

Case studies in the health theme concentrate on the medical issues associated with rising population in a   rural village in Africa; nutritional deficits in India; pharmaceutical development from plants in the Central   American rainforest, and Mad Cow Disease in Denmark. Cases and curriculum accessed in a virtual library at   Cornell University focus on specific and localized situations to support a controlled, in-depth discussion of the   environmental and health-related ramifications. They serve as a springboard for a broader discussion of   worldwide trends and impact. A Global Forum complements the seminar through a distinguished lecture
  series on related world-wide topics.
